Five Films for February 5th, 2022
1. Collateral (HBO Max)
I selected this film because today is Michael Mann’s birthday. He was born in 1943 and has written and directed several hit films including this one.
Alternative Title to Watch - Ali (Netflix) - This 2001 film directed by Mann also stars Jamie Foxx in a supporting role with Will Smith portraying the title character.
2. The Night Porter (Criterion Channel and HBO Max)
I selected this film because today is Charlotte Rampling’s birthday. She was born in 1946 and has been starring in films for over five decades. This Italian film is one of her earlier impressive works.
Alternative Title to Watch - Stardust Memories (HBO Max) - Rampling co-stars in this semi-autobiographical Woody Allen film.
3. Apostle (Netflix)
I selected this film because today is Michael Sheen’s birthday. He was born in 1969 and has appeared in numerous television series and films throughout his career. Sheen gives a strong performance in this 2018 film about a religious cult set in the early 1900’s.
Alternative Title to Watch - The Special Relationship (HBO Max) - Michael Sheen portrays Tony Blair in this 2010 film that also stars Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton.
4. The Machinist (Paramount Plus)
I selected this 2004 film because today is Jennifer Jason Leigh’s birthday. She was born in 1962 and has over 100 acting credits. Leigh portrays a prostitute in this movie starring Christian Bale.
Alternative Title to Watch - In the Cut (Netflix) I feel that Leigh’s performance is one of the highlights of this 2003 film co-starring Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo.
5. Best in Show (HBO Max)
I selected this film because today is Christopher Guest’s birthday. He was born in 1948 and in addition to acting in several films, he has also written and directed numerous movies. This 2000 film is one of my favorites that he has directed.
Alternative Title to Watch - Mascots (Netflix) - This 2016 film is the last feature film that Guest has directed.
